I still think local papers can make it, as long as their staff levels aren't inflated. The big companies are going through a staff-level correction right now, but I don't think it has to kill them. Local advertisers still love print.

I think readership is great, wherever you find it. What I think this trend points to is that the cash which supported 200- and 300-person newsrooms is going to start disappearing as the declining reach of newspapers-on-print makes them less of a bargain for local and national advertisers. I'm not happy about that, of course, but it's a reality that has to be addressed.

It's difficult to compare drops in local print subscribers to the increase in online readers because of Google and the like. We can say that we get more unique visitors than the print paper we are "competing" against, but that is disingenuous. A large percentage of our readers find our articles through search, and I'm sure Sun's percentage is even higher.

I'm waiting for the net-enabled kiosk that can print all or part of a newspaper in seconds, allowing ala carte newspaper purchases. Think about it, If I want the NYT world news section along with the Sun's Sports section, I can pick them from the touch screen, insert my money or swipe, and 15 seconds later I have both on recycled paper. The kiosk connects to both the NYT and Sun servers, downloads the xml data with a stylesheet, and prints it right there for me. The same service can be available in the home.

Hmm, maybe I should patent that, or just stop talking about it all together... :-)
