Separation of duties does have something going for it. There's no reason someone I trust shouldn't audit their own books...

I take Brogan's point as expressed above but whilst he may feel he has the integrity to make such arrangements work, not everyone does. Self-audited standards soon stop being standards.

I have read Chris side on his site and I'll go with him. He sounds reasonable enough on what he thinks is nothing wrong.

eep. bad idea, chris. there are other ways you can make money, even if you're a one-man blogging crew. just get kmart to sponsor your work -- you don't have to write about them. if you're a popular blogger connecting with the young hipsters, they should be itching to serve up ads in front of their eyeballs.

[...] Re-engineering the wall between church and state. Does a sponsored post at a popular blog damage the author’s credibility? Should the rules for the big guys apply to the smaller? Tim Windsor asks some questions, and makes some points, about the ad/editorial divide. [...]

I think the main issues is painting anyone with a blog as a journalist. A news journalist should be kept as 'pure' as possible by all means, but how many writers on websites and blogs are actively engaged in something that could be portrayed as news journalism and portray themselves as such?

A blog is simply a website in chronological order, and therefore we shouldn't be attempting to judge anyone on the grounds of ethical newswriting unless they are covering something in that particular approach. As a journalist, I always tried to remain an impartial and unbiased as possible (within the limits of being human!), but now that I'm in marketing and blogging, should I avoid any product placement or advertising? Am I compromised by having Google ads, or an Amazon affiliate link?
