I think what was unique about Steve was that he had such a clear vision...which made saying 'no' a little easier as he knew where he wanted to go. For the rest of us whose ideas aren't as formed saying 'yes' may actually open doors and help clarify our vision.. RIP Steve.

Those types of UI issues are why IT folks have a bad rap. That is utterly ridiculous that it didn't show you all the morning trains. It should also tell you the timeframe that morning means. I use Orbitz a fair bit and their "portion of the day" selections alway seem to work as desired, so it can be done right.

I think that we should be able to transfer anything to someone else that we've already paid for, at least for them to use in the same capacity. As far as cost, it should be cheaper for the consumer since the authors don't have to go through all of the technicalities of actually having a physical book manufactured.

This is thought-provoking. But frankly, I am not sure how it will work. Any story by the media today is attacked as suffering from political bias from anyone that disagrees with it. Saying "here is where I'm coming from" will give further ammunition to the detractors of any story. And whenever a journalist fails to disclose a bias that would serve the interests of someone that wants to attack their story, they will accuse the journalist of failing to disclose a bias...which leaves us exactly where we are today.

As someone who hires recent graduates, this made me realize that I tend to favor the ink-stained applicants. Although it might have something to do with me doing it during my time at college, I'm sure subconsciously I'm more considering the experience that that job gives the potential employees.

Hmm, I couldn't agree more. Being in the school paper requires time and effort. It's, I guess one of the most complex experiences I have ever had.

This article nails it. Every time I'm invited to attend a Towerlight editorial board meeting, I come away with a new respect for my students. They are discussing issues like ethics and monetization in ways we can't even approach in the classroom.

Respectfully, I disagree. Why does it have to be zero-sum? If there are already strong local voices in a community, there can be many successful web sites, not just one. The people I have met at Patch are driven by that same passion you describe -- to bring quality journalism to the town level. That's what attracted me to the project, and that's what motivates me as I join the effort.
